An Interview with a Tutor, Esther Blaser-Tokarev by Caroline. (Student with a disability)

  1. What is your view of working with people with disabilities in the classroom?

It is very important for everyone to receive the same education; no matter how able they are, nobody should be excluded from society. People with disabilities are individuals like anyone else and, like you and I, their human rights, for example education, need to be upheld and respected.

  2. What is your experience as a Tutor?

I have been working with people with special needs for more than 12 yrs. I really enjoy it, as I teach people important aspects of life. I meet so many different people who are unique in their own way with a range of disabilities. Many of my students put a lot of effort into learning and are motivated and appreciate the value of learning.

  3. What needs do you encounter and how do you address them when teaching people with special needs?

The needs that I see involve time and more support. Some people need me to teach them in little steps. I show empathy towards everyone and adapt to their social, emotional and mental needs. I need to be very flexible!

  4. What kinds of things can you do to enhance students learning of subjects and in the classroom?

I have an awareness of different types of disabilities. Some people's disabilities' are mild and other people require the use of modified equipment and resources. I also keep in contact with different support networks, such as the Adult Community Education (ACE) Disability Network.

  5. How does the learning environment impact on how someone learns?

The classroom and learning environment must be healthy, positive and supportive. Emphasis is plACEd on trust and the atmosphere for learning is made comfortable to encourage people to open up and be ready to learn.

  6. In your experience, what do you think people with disabilities can offer in a learning environment?

People with disabilities can offer a great deal of insight, understanding and personal skills to others. Through group discussions, awareness of health and other issues, the ignorance and fear that may be experienced by some can be minimised or disappear. Friendship is something too!!
