Disability information for providers

As a Co-ordinator of a Neighbourhood House or Learning Centre, you are responsible for co-ordinating all the activities of the centre with the support of your management committee, staff and volunteers.

The wonderful array of programs that your centres offer, provide invaluable opportunities for a range of people, some of whom cannot access mainstream education and therefore may be disadvantaged, however we are aware that you may need support to make your centre and its programs more inclusive of people with disabilities.

Whether you need advice on how to physically assist someone with a disability into a class, understand how to best assist a person to participate, deal with a behavioural issue or obtain resources we can help.

You would also be aware that there are a number of legal frameworks and standards that require your services to be open, welcoming and accessible to all people that come into your centres and we believe that in most cases this is happening. Visit the Disability legislation information page to learn more about this.

Remember to regularly check this website for free training, resource information, assistance and support available to ensure that people with disabilities can access your centre and its programs like anyone else.

Information for Teachers, Tutors or Education Co-ordinators

As a teacher or tutor you have a key role in developing the skills and confidence of your students. Students with disabilities may have particular needs that may need particular planning, resources and flexibility. We would encourage you to do all you can to welcome any person with a disability and offer our support to you to help to make this a positive experience for you and all others concerned.

You may need ideas, practical support, information about carers, help with forms, transport access, class materials, specialised equipment, or communication assistance just to name some: We’re here to help. If we cannot assist you directly or in a timely fashion we may be able to refer you to someone who can. You need not worry, most of what we provide is free or at a low cost.

Remember to regularly check this website for free training, resource information, assistance and support available to ensure that people with disabilities can access your centre and its programs like anyone else.
